The river's pulse
Environment and Climate Change Canada's station 02OA016 measures the river level at Jetée no 1 in the Old Port every five minutes, relative to chart datum. The level rises with the thaw and the spring floods of the Great Lakes and the Ottawa River, drops in late summer, and responds to wind and to the regulation of the Moses-Saunders dam.
It is the only MTL Stats page updated continuously: the others follow the rhythm of the City's sampling. A high level dilutes overflows and eases navigation; a low level exposes the shores and concentrates whatever is discharged there.
